from http://www.encyclopedia.com Gutenberg, Johann c.1397-1468, German printer, believed to have been the first European to print with movable TYPE. Laurens Janszoon Koster of Holland and Pamfilo Castaldi of Italy are thought by some to have preceded him. Gutenberg's name did not appear on any of his work, and details of his life are scant. He is thought to have trained as a goldsmith. He may have invented PRINTING in Strasbourg in 1436 or 1437, but the work attributed to him, including the MAZARIN BIBLE (1455), was done in Mainz. He had to give up his press and types to Johann FUST for debt.
The Project Gutenberg
was started in 1971, by Michael Hart at the Materials Research Lab at the University of
Illinois.

What is PG?
The Project Gutenberg Philosophy is to make information, books and other materials available to the general public in forms a vast majority of the computers, programs and people can easily read, use, quote, and search. This has several ramifications: 1. The Project Gutenberg Etexts should cost so little that no one will really care how much they cost. They should be a general size that fits on the standard media of the time ... 2. The Project Gutenberg Etexts should so easily used that no one should ever have to care about how to use, read, quote and search them ...
